WIND OF COLORFULGUIZHOU
Guizhou is a place highlighted by its numerous grand ethnic festivals and extremely diverse ethnic population. As one of the most distinctive tourist destinations in China, Guizhou attracts millions of travellers each year.
The Wind of Colourful Guizhou performing art show is inspired heavily by its local heritage. With its elaborate and diverse cultural elements such as folk songs, artistic writing, symbolic dances and folklore, coupled with rich costumes and an artful blend of vivid colours, sounds and movements, the whole show is designed to inspire and wow. Moreover, in order to show some of the daily lives of the Guizhou people, several acts are adapted from ballads, folk songs and traditional dances.
One such performance is Dance to the Drumbeat which originated from an important Miao minority festival. In real life, it is an indispensable part of Miao’s ceremonies. During the festival in hot summers, the Miao girls would travel several miles with their parents to perform the dance. And while the young girls are dancing to the rhythm of the wooden drum, the young men would be found busily searching and charming the girls they fancy. This is a dance that symbolises beauty, power and strength and has received great acclaim in Western Europe, North America, East Asia and Australia.
The award winning dance act “Girls like water” reflects the Miao girls’ caring and devotion to their families. Traditional gender roles still exist in the Miao society with women assuming the responsibility of looking after the children and eat after their husbands.
Since its premier in 2005, the Wind of Colourful Guizhou has been performed about 1,500 times, and has attracted over a million audiences in both China and overseas.
