History
Since being officially opened on 10 August 1996 by His Excellency the Right Honourable Sir Michael Hardie Boys GNZM GCMC Governor General of New Zealand, the Bruce Mason Centre has established itself as the leading theatre and conference centre on Auckland's North Shore.

The concept of a world class theatre and conference centre was initiated through North Shore Operatic Society in March 1984. In September of that year a steering committee was formed and the North Shore Theatre and Conference Centre Trust was created in November. Following nine years of meetings and negotiations the new North Shore City Council endorsed the partnership with the theatre trust in October 1993.
April 1995 saw the turning of the first sod to commemorate the start of the building project which took over two years to complete. Designed and built on a budget two thirds the cost per seat of a normal theatre of its size at the time, the Bruce Mason Centre was an amazing achievement. For a tiny $12.7 million original cost, the theatre boasted a proscenium arch, tiered theatre seating for 953, an international size stage, the unique ability to turn the entire Auditorium into a flat-floor space, and fantastic natural acoustics. The Conference Centre was added in 1997 to create a truly multi purpose venue and the hub of excitement on the North Shore.
Since then the Centre has continued to develop with the addition of meeting rooms and the expansion of the foyer to incorporate the Playwright Cafe. The auditorium has been completely refurbished and the seating capacity increased to 1164.
